Minnesota Legislative Post Session Update
On Monday, August 28th, the Minnesota Supreme Court began hearing the oral arguments on behalf of Governor Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature. The justices are considering the legality of Governor Dayton’s line-item veto of the Legislature’s budget, which took place in the special session. Ramsey County Chief Judge, John Guthmann, had previously ruled the Governor’s use of the line-item veto was not permitted. As the story by the Pioneer Press found here mentions, if the Supreme Court upholds Judge Guthmann’s decision, there would consequently be new limitations imposed on the Governor’s power. The six-member court has not announced when they will come to a decision, with Justice David Stras having recused himself.
In other news, Senator David Osmek announced his intentions to enter the gubernatorial race, as reported by WCCO here. The Republican field also includes: Jeff Johnson, Blake Huffman, Christopher Chamberlin, Phillip Parrish, Jeffrey Wharton, Ole Savior, Keith Downey, and Matt Dean. The DFL field includes: Paul Thissen, Tim Walz, Rebecca Otto, Chris Coleman, Erin Murphy, and Tina Liebling.
